Kerala’s First Nun
The first members of the religious order she founded were her daughter Anna and Sister Teresa.
Kerala’s first nun, Mother Eliswa’s year-long death centenary celebrations were concluded the other day.
The widow turned nun Eliswa was the founder of the first Indian Congregation for Women. It was the Congregation of Texesian Caremelites (CTC). She was vacationed in the church of Koonammavu in Ernakulam district.
She was born in a rich family in Ochanthuruth of Ernamulam district on 15 October 1831. After the death of her husband she was in retreat for 14 years boldly resisting pressure of family for remarriage as her preference was for the work for the welfare of all, especially women.
