There is a growing trend of new-born babies subjecting to kill by mothers in the State. The reasons contributed to the horrifying acts are superstition, post-partum depression and sociological factors emerged from courtships.
A look at the crimes against the new borns is horrifying. Just take the example of crimes against newborns since 2013 in 5 districts to know the prevailing grim situation. Idukki recorded 5 cases of murder, injury and abandonement while Kottayam recorded 7 crimes of which 5 were abandoned, one sale of child and one denial of care and protection. Pathanamthitta reported 4 cases out of which three were abandonement and one case was of murder by unwed mother who was impregnated by her own father. Kollam stood at 4 crimes. All of them were abandoned by unwed mothers. Malappuram’s tally is 7, all abandoned and Kozhikode accounted for 2 murder of new borns.
