Chronicles from a typical Kerala Village

our male and female correspondents from a typical Kerala village near Thrissur keep you abreast of th life and times of a Kerala village making the transition from ancient customs to contemporary Indian life.

Malicious Mind

Devu, aged around 60, is an expert in igniting family feuds.  She has poisoned the peaceful family life of over 15 homes around her house.  She pretends to be a well wisher and gradually starts digging at the root of their life by casting one against others in the family.  When her heinous acts became public the villagers started keeping her at bay.

Family Feud on Smoking

Chain smoker Babu has only feeble income not enough to meet the expenses of cigarettes.  He forces wife to part with a part of her daily wage as construction worker.  The hesitating wife murmurs and finally become compelled to part with some cash.  The hot talk of the topic often leads to family feuds.  Neighbours forced to intervene many times as their peace of life breached.  Sternest warning to Babu by them produced no positive result.

Petty Business Earns Pretty

Abdu, street hawker of fried peanut, pushes his four-bicycle-wheeled hand-cart around 4 pm from his house to a commercial centre of his village where there are liquor bars.  He does soaring business till 8 pm.  The onlookers naturally ignore his silly business.  When he built a palatial bungalow costing around 6 million rupees many wondered and put their finger on nose.  Later, he divulged to a close friend that he has quiet income of rupees three thousand a day from the sale of around rupees three thousand five hundred.  The friend really got stunned.

War on Milk Yield

Cow dealer Moideen sold a cow which was purchased 3 days ago to an acquaintance with a promise the milk yield is 10 litres in the morning.  Purchaser got yield of only 6 litres 3 days continuously.  He came with the complaint of shortage in milk output.  He demanded either to take back the cow or return proportionate value in terms of the short output.  Moideen did not budge from his stand it had output of 10 litres.  He added he can do nothing.  The purchaser went back and came back with the cow.  He knotted the cow in the stable of Moideen and left.  Moideen was not present then.  What will follow is yet to be seen.

Undeserved Demand Blocks Avenues

Fresh-water fish hawker Thanka sold her 3 cents of land with a small house to arrange finance for the marriage of her younger daughter.  No relatives came forward to offer her shelter.  At last she and her fish trapper husband sheltered on the bank of a rivulet under a tent.  When the bank of rivulet submerged in flood water they packed to mainland where no one helped her.  All shuttered the doors against her because she had once demanded 5 cents of land as her right for doing house chores in a family.

Ward Member Cornered

An elected lady Ward Member of local self-government body called Panchayat invented an easy method to make quick money.  She dodged a sum of Rs 3 lakh of a women’s body called Kudumbasree.  State government has organized thousands of Kudumbasrees throughout the state.  Kudambasree is a collectiveness of women numbering 10 to 50.  The government gives financial assistance and facilitates loan from the banks to engage the women in business or industrial activities to have their own income.  The amount dodged by the ward member was that of a Kudambasree.  She obtained authorization in her name from each member of the Kudambasree to receive cash from Panchayat and bank.  In spite of having received the amount from both the ends she informed the women that it will take some time to get the amount.  The dodging became open when each member received notice for defaulted payment.  All the ladies have cornered the ward member, landing her in soup.

Paid for Unheeding

Soda maker Wilson himself drives his three-wheeler soda delivery vehicle.   Right from the early morning till mid-night he is in inebriated condition all the days.  He has hit his vehicle on trees and electric poles several times.  Many advised him not to drive in drunken state but he did not heed to the advices.  Few days back his vehicle hit on an electric pole around 8 o’clock in the night causing severe damage to his vehicle and the pole.  Somebody telephonically reported the incident to the electricity office.  Next day morning the officials called him to the office and made him pay Rs 6000/- towards the cost of pole and installation charge.  If it was somebody else no body would have reported the incident to the authorities.  In his case reporting was deliberate as he never cared to heed to the advice of villagers not to drive in drunken condition.
