Speciality of Ramayana Masam
This month, Karkidakom, (July 16 onward) is a month of rites and recitation of scriptures for Hindu Malayalis. Once, this month was called ‘Panja Masam’ meaning lean month. In the dictionary of Malayalis there is no lean month now as all the12 months are of prosperity for them. Earlier, during Karkidakom workers were forced sit idle at home and starve because of no work openings due to heavy rain. In the present time rain or no rain work opportunities in fall fronts are in abundance.
During Karkidakom at every Hindu home (in the changed scenario to all Hindu families) elder reads Thunchat Ramanujan Ezhucthan’s Adhyatma Ramayanam or say Valmiki Ramayanam. There is compulsion that the entire epic is read over before expiry of the month. Valmiki Ramayanam is in the form of Kilipattu (song of bird). A parrot narrates the tale. The verses read like this: Sree Rama Namam Paadi Vanna Painkili Penne Sreerama Charitham Nee Chollud Madiyathi (dear darling bird chanting Lord Rama’s name why are you hesitating to tell the tale of Rama).
During this month, devotees visit at a stretch four different temples devoted to Rama brothers (Rama, Bharatha, Laxmana and Shatrugna).
