On 18July Thrissur witnessed a reformed tradition. First full moon day of Malayalam month Karkidakom was a day of homage to the departed souls to appease them. It is known as Karkkidaka Vavu Balitharpanam in local parlance.
Few enthusiasts led by Kalamandalam Gopi, Madambu Kunjikuttan, Kalamandalam Kshemavathi, Guruvayur Devasom Board Chairman T V Chndramohan, Oushadi Chairman Johny Nellur and other celebrities planted Ashoka (saraca ashoka) saplings at Vilangan Kunnu (hill), a tourist spot, in its Ashoka Vanam (Ashoka forest) on the auspicious day of Karkkidaka Vavu. More than 100 people planted saplings on the occasion. Above 500 Ashoka trees already grow here in different age groups.
The program was jointly organized by District Tourism Promotion Council, Kerala Forest Research Institute, Vilangan Trekkers Club, Kerala Medicinal Plants Board, Oushadhi and Adat Grama Panchayat.
