Once self-sufficient Kerala in the matter of brooms made of coconut leaf-spinters by trimming twigs is now depending Tamil Nadu for the same. Brooms made from coconut twigs are long-lasting and better for cleaning the dust and cobwebs in homes and other places than any other modern gadgets available in the market.
Around 50 truck-loads of brooms land in Kerala every month from Tamil Nadu as against Kerala used to export to Chennai, Delhi, Mumbai in yesteryears after meeting domestic requirements. Earlier, women in the Kerala homes used to trim the coconut twigs to make the brooms. In the modern era they have no time and more over there is scarcity for the right type of twigs due to rampant root-wilt disease to coconut palms in Kerala. The third factor of scarcity for Kerala brooms is a tendency to go after modern gadgets and new type of products made from certain types of grass the life of which is far short of coconut spinter-brooms.
