Thalassery Fort

Arthur Wellesley fought out the great warrior Pazhassi Raja from here. Later in 1781 Hyder Ali, the then ruler of Mysore Kingdom, tried to conquer the fort but in vain.

Thalassery Fort on Tiruvellipadkunnu, located 22 km from Kannur, built by British East India Company in 1708 is a colossal square structure. The structure was built by laterite stone using mixture of quick lime, egg white and jaggery. The walls are massive and ventilated and is flanked by bastions. Secret tonnels leading to the sea, intricate doors and a short lighthouse proclaim the British architectural stlyle and value.

East India Company came to Thalassery in 1683 and took permission from the then ruler of the region, Kolathiris, to build the fort with the objective of establishing their stronghold in Malabar coast. It was one of the military centers of British. When the fort was built it was meant for storing of pepper and cardamom.

Thalassery Fort now is a monument preserved by Archaeological Survey of India.
