The Disappearing Devakoothu

Devakoothu is one of the 400 forms of theyyam characters of mythical heroes performed in the temples. Except Devakoothu all other theyyam characters are performed by males. For Devakoothu it is a woman performance.

The fort of theyyam in Kerala is Kannur. Presently in whole of Kerala only one woman from Kattiparambil family of Madayi in Kannur was there to perform Devakoothu. Owing to the ill-health from this year she has relinquished from the performance. A woman from her family has luckily come forward to play the role for Thekkambadkulam temple near Cherukunnu in Kannur where alone presently Devakoothu is performed in whole of Kerala.
