Western Ghats on World Heritage List

Western Ghats of India has been placed on the accredited list of World Heritage Sites. World Heritage Committee meeting held at St Petersburg, Russia has decided to include 39 serial sites of the Western Ghats in the World Heritage List. Out of this 39 sites, 19 sites are in Kerala part of Western Ghats. Remaining 20 sites are spread over Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra.

Western Ghats was inscribed under criteria 9 and 10 of Operational Guidelines of World Heritage Convention, Dean of Wildlife Institute of India, Vinod B Mathur said. Criterion 9 covers properties which are outstanding examples of significant ongoing ecological and biological processes in the evolution and development of terrestrial, fresh water, coastal and marine ecosystems and communities of plants and animals whereas criterion10 is in relation to those properties which the most important and significant natural habitats for in-situ conservation of biological diversity including those containing threatened species of outstanding universal value from the point of view of science or conservation.

Out of 21 World Heritage Committee members 17 strongly supported India.
