Naming of Ayurveda Treatments in summary format with explanations and uses


Duration – 14 days to 56 days. Luke-warm herbal oil applies to the whole body. Then 2 to 4 therapists massage by hand and foot rhythmically for 60 to 90 minutes. Paralysis, arthritis, hemiplegia, paralysis-agitanus, sexual weakness, nervous weakness, nervous disorders etc respond to this treatment very well. Pizhichil is another name of sarvangdhara meaning squeezing warm medicated oil all over the body with the help of cloth pieces ,which are periodically dipped into vessels containing oil.


Duration – 14 to 28 days. This treatment cures rheumatic disorders, emaciation of limbo, joints’ pain, high blood pressure, cholesterol, some types of skin diseases etc. Bolus application is the method of treatment. Bolus made of muslin bags filled with warm medicated rice go into the application by way of stroke-massage on the affected part or whole body for 45 to 90 minutes a day.


Herbal oils, medicated milk, medicated butter milk etc pour on the forehead in a specific manner. This lasts for 45 minutes to one hour per day. The composition of inputs may vary, depending upon the inventive experience of the physician or the establishment. This pack is mainly for insomnia, arthritis, mental tension, certain skin diseases etc


The word Dhara means,continuous pouring of medicated liquid over the body. Sirodhara is a unique kerala special treatment. It is beneficial in alleviating the tridoshas. Pouring the medicated oil or liquid on the head from a particular distance by the help of a dhara vessel is performed in this treatment. For sirodhara a structure similar to drip stand is used to suspend the vessel that holds dhara fluid. The vessel has a hole at its bottom.A wick hangs down through this hole and the liquid is allow to flow down through this. Above this wick a coconut shell with serrated edge should be kept facing downwards to guide the flow of the liquid. The treatment starts with the application of the oil on the head and the body.Then the varti(roll of cloth)is tied around the head of the patient to prevent the leakage of the liquid. The patient is made to lie down on his back and dhara vessel is suspended about 5cm above his forhead.Then medicated oil is poured in to the dhara vessel.pouring is to be done very slowly to prevent the scattering. The vessel should be moved to either side of the forhead during the treatment. After the procedure hot water bath is given to the patient. Duration of the treatment is about 45 minutes to one hour.


Vasti is the most important procedure among panchakarma. It is the treatment for vata predominant diseases and an excellent treatment to mitigate all the doshas. In this medicated oil or decoction are injected in to the colon through the anus using an instrument called vasti netra(enema nozzle). Vasti is mainly divided in to Asthapana vasti and anvasana vasti.

On the day of asthapana vasti the patient should satisfy his natural urges in the morning. oil massage and steam bath is given on the abdomen,low back region.Anal region is lubricated with oil.Then the tip of the instrument for vasti is introduced to the anus and vasti bag is squeezed slowly and allowed to enter the medicinal decoction in to the colon.Then the patient should lie on his back,expecting vega.As soon as he feels the urge and should evacuate the bowel.Soon after the complete evacuation of the bowel patient should take hot water bath.After bath food should be taken immediately.

Anvasana basti is introduced immediately after the meals.In this medicated oil,ghee or bone marrow is introduced in to the rectum through the enema instrument.There is no harm if the oil remain inside up to nine hours.if it comes out immediately, the process is repeated.

Arthritis, Neurological problem, Low back ache, Infertility, complaints of alimentary system.


This is a treatment which gives extraordinary releif from all ailments connected with vata in the head.In this, medicated oil is poured in to a leather cap which is fixed over the head. The patient is made to sit on a chair.Oil is applied on his head,body and mild massage is given.The prepared blackgram paste is applied over a bandage cloth and tied it around the head.Leather cap should be kept over the head.The inner part of the leather cap is smeared by blackgram paste.Medicated oil is made to lukewarm and poured in to the leather cap.This should be changed repeatedly to maintain the constant temperature.The leather cap and the oil is removed after 45 minutes.Mild massage is given to the neck and the shoulder of the patient.after that hotwater bath is given to the patient.


Hemiplegia, paralysis, obesity, some kinds of rheumatic complaints etc.


The term abhyanga is used as a synonym of oil massage. It is beneficial for preserving youthfulness,alleviating vata troubles,for the comfort of the eyes,tonning up the body,sound sleep,softness and firmness of the sin,preventing skin diseases and for a long life.

Duration – 7 days to 28 days. Stroke-massage after applying herbal oil for 45 minutes is the method of therapy. The mode of stroke varies according to the disease. Obesity, diabetic gangrene and the like diseases quickly respond to this type of stroke-massage. The ayurvedic oil massage is an integral part of the daily routine recommended by this healing system for overall health and well-being. Abhyangam can increase the production of white blood corpuscles and antibodies, which provide more resistance against viruses and diseases. This helps the defense mechanism in the body and increases immunity towards environmental changes. In this way abhyangam massage is a protector, preserver and a rejuvenator, increasing self-confidence and will power. To massage is to exercise the nervous system.


Nasya is the ayurvedic procedure whereby the medicine is administered through the nasal passage.It is useful in eliminating the impurities above the shoulders.A healthy person can also practice this procedure

Nasya karma is usually done at 7.30-8.30 in the morning or 5pm or 6pm in the evening on empty stomach.The patient should satisfy the natural urges before nasya.Then the patient is made to sit comfortably on a chair.Oil is applied on the head, neck, shoulder, chest and mild massage is given. Fomentation is done by using steam.When sufficient sweat appears,patient is made to lie on his back on the table.The head level should be lower than the feet level.The medicine is warmed before use and it is administered in to the nostrils with the help of a dropper.The patient should draw the medicine and should turn the head to either side.And should try to bring out the kapha and spit out until the throat is completely cleared.Then medicated smoking is performed.After this the mouth should be gargled with medicated decoction.Then the patient is advised to take rest and have light food after 1 hour. Treatment for Head ache,Neurological problems.


Snehapana is one among the pre-operative procedures of panchakarma. It is done in the morning after evacuation of the bowels and urine.The medicated ghee is administered internally on empty stomach.The health, age, dosha condition and digestive caacity of the patient need to be taken in to consideration when determining the dosage. The treatment lasts between five and seven days depending on the condition of the patent and the illness being treated.


Effective for spine disorders, sports injuries, osteoarthritis, swelled arthritis etc. Ayurveda Duration – 7 days to 28 days.

Medicated oil is applied on the affected part first. Then application of bolus made of herbal leaves and herbal powder or herbs is followed for half an hour to 45 minutes a day.


Karnapoorana literally means filling the ears with medicated liquid. As properative procedure,the ear lobes are gently massaged with oil.Then the patient is made to lie down on one side.The purified liquid or oil is gently poured in the ear facing up.After remaining in the same posture for 5 minutes,the patient is turned and the process is repeated in the other ear. Ear ache,Tinnitus.


Introducing medicated smoke in to the ears is known as Kanadhoopana. Ear ache,Tinnitus,Diseases above the neck.

Rejuvanation Massage

Removes toxins from the body, nourishes tissues, prevents psychological wear and tear, clears the channels of the body etc.

Steam Bath

Removes impurities from the system through excretory outlets like the sweat glands, kidneys and liver etc. (Hip bath, spinal bath, mud batch etc are the variations of steam bath).


Insomnia and stress, memory improvement, improvement of central nervous system’s functions and helps hair growth.


Conditions the facial skin, reduces pimples, black heads etc and makes the skin glow.


De-toxification of the body, prevention of ailments, purification and rejuvenation of the body etc.


Vamana is one among the body purification procedure, which comes under panchakarma. In this procedure the vitiated dosha are eliminated from the body through the oral route. Abhyanga, snehapana, steam bath, utklesana(administrating kapha increasing food items) are done as pre-operative procedures. Vamana is done on the next day morning (between 5am and 7am)after utklesana.After proper evacuation of bowels and urine patient is made to sit on the chair. A basin is kept infront of the patient to collect the vomitus. Initially 3-5 glasses of milk is administered,then the medicine which induce vomitting is given. Afterwards the patient has to drink the milk as much as possible.The patient is advised to be ready for vomitting and wait about 20-30 minutes. Vomitting is continued till pitta appears in the vomitus. After completing the vamana patient should wash his face and mouth with hot water.After taking rest for few minutes,medicated smoking is performed.The patient is advised to take rest till the evening and after that should take the hot water bath. Indications for skin diseases,Insanity,Elephantiasis,Asthma.


Virechana is a purifactory procedure in which the vitiated doshas are expelled through the anus. After the snehapana(internal administration of medicated ghee),steam bath is given to the patient.On the previous day of virechana patient is advised to take easily digestable food.On the day of virechana,the patient is restricted from any food and he must satisfy his urges before the drug administration. The medicine for virechana is administered on empty stomach in the morning between 8.30 and 9.30 am.The patient has to drink the warm water and should wait for 2-3 hours.Then the purgation(virechana) occurs. For Skin diseases,Garlic components,Intestinal worms.


Rakthamoksha is done as a therapeutic remedy in many diseases. Samanachikilsa and Sodhanachikilsa are the two means by which diseases are controlled or cured in Ayurveda. Samanachikilsa is indicated for the mild and medium range cases, whereas Sodhanachikilsa is indicated for deep rooted and profound cases. Samanachikils is highly advisable for unhealthy patients who may have been weakened by their ailment. Sodhanachikilsa is aimed at total eradication by eliminating the root cause and administered to healthy patients only. The therapeutic value of Rakthamoksha is tremendous. Rakthamoksha is done when the vitiated cause is blood-related. It is done only when the d rug therapy proves ineffective.

There are two types of Rakthamoksha. For one type sharp instruments called Shastravisravana is employed, whereas for the second type blunt instruments or leeches are employed. This type is called Anusasthravisravana.

In Anusastravisravana, leeching helps remove the vitiated blood. In this the leech placed on the affected spot suck the vitiated blood. As an alternative a suction apparatus is employed for which the affected spot is punctured where the apparatus is fitted and it sucks out the vitiated blood. It is called Alabuavacharana. Sringa is another instrument in lieu of Alabu employed.

Khadvacharana, using a vcuumised earthern pot, is yet another method which is more or less similar to Alabuavacharana.

Rakthamoksha is generally done for the people within the age group of 12 to 50 and the periodicity is determined according to the health conditions and vitiation rate of the blood.

Jalaukavacharana (blood suction by leech). This method is very safe to employ even in the cases after plastic surgery, ophthalmic surgery or cardiac surgery. The patient feels no irritation, no pain, no itching etc.

Both male and female leeches are used. Males are more acceptable as they drink more blood.

Rakthamoksha is done in certain cases of complaints in joints and some cases of skin ailments.

Selection of Leech, Preparation of Patient & Application : Selected healthy and freely moving leech and put it in a pot or t ray containing turmeric power mixed water. Turmeric powder is mixed in order to activate the leech.

TT injection to the patient prior to the application is advisable but not compulsory. Clean the affected area with hot water. Place the leech on the affected spot and mildly hold it with cotton till it starts drinking. If hesitate to suck, place a drop of milk or ghee on the affected spot.

The leech detaches on its own after drinking the impure blood. If not detached, place a pitch of turmeric powder on its head when it will detach quickly. If itching or pain is felt to the patient, it is the indication of having removed all the impure blood.

It is advisable to clean and bandage the bite mark to avoid contact with infection.


Elakizhi or Ela Kizhi

Alleviates vatha, pitha, kapha. Ela Kizhi is a process of massaging the body with heated cloth bag filled with fried medicinal leaves like ricinus, calatropis, tarmarind etc. In this massage certain herbal leaves would be held inside a small linen bundle and it would  be soaked inside warm oil and massaged over the body. Stimulates the nerves and helps to reduce pain. Ela Kizhiis perrformed for the alleviation of symptoms of Rheumatism, arthritis, paralysis, sciatica, spondylosis and certain nervous disorders.


Rakthavatha distended stomach, chronic catarrh, calculus, impurities of semen, menstrual flow, obstruction of flatus, urine, semen etc.


Paralysis, neuropathy etc.


In this treatment the folded cloth pieces dipped in the medicated oil are squeezed all over the body. This is performed by four attendants.The fifth attendant is for heating the oil.After massaging the body for a while,in sitting position,the patient is made to lie on the treatment table and the cloth pieces dipped in medicated oil are squeezed all over the body followed by massage.This should be done in 7 positions.The slow massage is done without exerting much pressure.The oil is to be heated every now and then,to maintain the warmth.After the treatment mild masasage is given followed by hot water bath.

Patra podal sweda

Patra means leaf and potali means linen bundle.It is a kind of sudation therapy using herbal leaves.It is one of the major sweda(sudation)procedure practices in Kerala. The leaves of Arka (calotropis gigantea),Karanja (pongamia glabra),Dhatura (Datura metel)are chopped and mixed with grated coconut,rock salt.The proportion of the ingradients varies according to the symptoms of the disease.The mixture is warmed in a pan smeared with coconut oil and then tied up in 4 linen bundles to be used for the foamentation. The patient is made to lie on his back,on the treatment table.oil is applied on his head and the body and mild massage is given.The potali's are warmed by dipping in the medicated oil on a gentle fire and applied in 7 postures.It is to be done for 5-10 minutes in each posture.after the treatment,the patient is advised to take rest for few minutes and hot water bath is given after the rest. Duration of the treatment is 45minutes.


It comes under the variety of sudation therapy in which sashtikasali (a particular kind of rice known for its medicinal value) processed in the decoction of bala (sida rhombifolia) and milk is used for the fomentation. sashtikasali(medicinal rice)is processed in the decoction of sida rhombifolia and milk,until the liquid part gets completely evaporated.The remaining mixture (decoction and milk) is kept over low fire.The cooked rice is made in to 4 equal parts and bundles are prepared out of it. The patient is made to lie on the treatment table,and oil is applied over the head and the body,massage is given for few minutes.The rice bundle is tolerably warmed in the mixture and massage is done all over the body with it.It should be done in 7 postures and it is very important to keep the bundles at a constant temperature,during the massage.After the completion of the treatment the rice is applied over the body for few minutes and scraped out by coconut leaves.After that hot water bath is given to the patient.

Duration of the treatment is 45 minutes to 1 hour.

Marmachikilsa or Marmachikitsa

Duration – Depends upon the intensity of the distortion. In normal case, it takes 14 to 28 days. The treatment consists of oil massage, bandage with herbs and herbal leaves and intake of herbal medicines. This Ayurvedic treatment is for the correction of muscular-skeletal disorders (fracture, broken bones etc). The treatment works through the 107 Marmas (sensitive vital organs of the body).


Reumatism, backache of various causes, sciatic pain, skin ailments fever of diverse aetiology, chronic diarrhea , jaundice, diabetes, diseases of urinary tract, hemorrhoids or piles, fistula, cardiac diseases, anemia etc.


Chronic cases such as corneal opacities, diabetic retinopathy, open angle glaucoma, repeated attacks of centro-serous retinopathy, otitis media, sensori-neural deafness, chronic sinusitis, nasal polypi, repeated attacks of aphthous ulcers, recurrent attacks of tonsillitis, even congenital disorders which are incurable such as re tinitis pigmentosa which ultimately leads to blindness.


Obstetrics and gynaecological cure. Assures healthy mother and healthy child after delivery. Ensures no myalgia, no back pain cervicitis, no prolapsed uterus etc.


Ayurvedic Duration - 14 to 28 days. Herbal oil mixed with herbal powder is applied on the top of the head for 30 to 45 minutes a day. It is an effective remedy for insomnia, migraine, ENT problem etc.

Vatha aggrevated diseases, leaning of body, paralysis etc.

Rasayana Chikilsa

Duration – 14 to 28 days. This is a rejuvenation therapy. Head and face massage with herbal oils and creams for 30 to 60 minutes daily. Whole-body massage with herbal oil and/or herbal powder by hand and foot for one to two hours per day follows. There is oral herbal medicine called Rasayana (infallible medicine) as part of the treatment. Medicated steam-bath or herbal bath is integrated into the course. This treatment not only rejuvenates the body but also improves mental clarity and tones up the skin.

Dhara Thyla, Thakra, Ksheera

Insomnia, mental tension, skin diseases, vatha predominated diseases etc.


Ayurveda Duration - 7 days to 28 days. This is medicated cow-milk fomentation treatment. Speech disorder, facial disorder, facial paralysis, bells palsy, nervous disorders of the face etc respond to the treatment.

Vasthi Bhramana Mathra Sneha Kashaya

Arthritis, paralysis, gastric complaints, rheumatism etc.

Lepanam Anna Siro Sirajala

Dhanyamala Dhara

The treatment prolongs 45 minutes to one hour daily. Using a special vessel, warm herbal liquid is poured all over the body and massaged gently.

For treatment of  paralysis, hemiplegia rheumatic complaints.

Kati Vasthi

The waist area of the body is called as kati.Kativasti is a procedure done in this area. The patient is made to lie down on the treatment table.A boundary is built up on the lower back with blackgram paste.The lukewarm medicated oil is poured in to it and retained there for sometime.after few minutes it is to be removed and mild massage is given on that area. Duration of the treatment is 25-30 minutes.

Yoni Prakshalanam

Gynaecological disorders, genital organs’ purification etc. Duration – 14 to 56 days. Herbal oils and herbal decoctions are poured into the vagina. This treatment corrects gynaecological disorders and also helps correct and purify genital organs.

Sandhivatha Chikilsa (Sanddhivatha Chikitsa)

Duration - 14 to 28 days. This treatment is highly effective effective for rheumatoid arthritis, gout, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, and cervical spondilosis. Massage, Lepanam (oil application), Stroke- massage with warm Kizhi (herbs filled molus made of muslin), Snehavasthy, Kashayavasthi, Pizhichal, Steambath, Navarakizhi and oral medicines.

Swarakosa Chikilsa

Duration – 14 to 28 days.

The treatment consists of body Massage, Pizhichal, Kizhi, Unovasti, Snehavasthi, Kashayavasthi, Nasyam and oral medicines.

The regimen cures bronchitis, sinusitis, prolonged cough and allergic rhinitis.

Sidhma Chikilsa

Psoriasis and all types other skin diseases. Duration - 14 to 28 days.

Sirovasthi, Snehapanam, Lepanam, Abhyangam, Pizhichal, Steambath and oral medicines are the treatments given. In certain cases yoga and/or meditation is also advised. This is an effective treatment for psoriasis and all types of other skin diseases.

Nadi Swedana

A localized application of steam with herbally medicated oils.This type of steam treatment focuses on specific areas of the body, such as sore joints or muscles, to improve mobility and flexibility, and to reduce pain and rigidity. The perfect therapy for those suffering from acute or chronic pain anywhere in the body.

Choorna Pinda Sweda

It is an another method for therapeutic sweating. In this body is formented with linen bundles containing drugs in powdered form. Powders of horsegram, blackgram, sesame seeds and other medicated powders are warmed on gentle fire and tied up in the bundles. The patient is made to lie down on the treatment table. The medicated oil is applied on the head and the body.Mild massage is given in different positions.The potali is heated by dipping in the medicated oil on gentle fire and applied in 7 postures. After the completion of the procedure patient is advised to take rest for few minutes. After that hot water bath is given to the patient. Duration of the treatment is about 45 minutes.


It is a treatment done in 'janu' or the kneejoint area. The patient is made to lie on the treatment table.A boundary is built up on the affected knee joint by blackgram paste.The medicated oil is warmed and poured in to it and retained there for sometime.After few minutes oil and the blackgram paste is removed.

Kayakalpa Chikitsa

Duration - 14 to 28 days. Whole-body massage with different herbal oils for one to two hours per day is given. Intake of Rasayana and dieting also form the part of treatment. This treatment ensures immunization and longevity by immunizing the system as a whole and putting brake on the degeneration process of body cells. This treatment is normally recommended for the people in the age bracket of 40 to 50.


Pouring medicated liquid or herbal extract in to the eyes is known as Netradhara. Extracts of herbs that possess preventive and curative properties are used for Netradhara.the patient is made to lie on the treatment table.A stream of herbal extract is gently poured in to the open eyes with the help of a vessel called gokarna.The patient should blink the eyes frequently during the treatment. Diseases of the eyes like dryness ,burning sensation and it helps to clear the vision.


The word Takra means butter milk. Dhara with medicated butter milk is called as Takradhara. It can be done either for the head alone (sirodhara) or for the whole body (sarvangadhara). If it is done for the head alone the procedure is like sirodhara and if its for the body procedure is same as sarvangadhara. For treatment of Mental worries, Insomnia, Insanity, skin diseases .

Dhanya Kizhi

Dhanya Kizhi is a form of treatment in which powdered cereals and pulses are bundled into a bolus, warmed and applied all over the body. This is done to reduce weight, and relieve joint pains in patients with rheumatic fever.


Udwartana is a process usually done in kapha aggrevated conditions. Massage is done with medicated powder all over the body in upward direction. In this process the patient is made to lie on the treatment table and mild oil massage is given all over the body. The medicated powder is warmed and applied over the body and rubbed in upward direction. This procedure performs in 7 positions as told before in Abhyanga after the process the powder is removed from the body by using a dry towel. After taking rest for few minutes, hot water bath is given to the patient. Duration of this treatment is about 45 minutes.


It is the treatment done in the 'uras' or chest region. This treatment is offered against asthma, chest congestion, chest-pain, respiratory problems etc.. The patient is made to lie on the treatment table. A boundary is built up on the chest by blackgram paste.Medicated oil is poured in to this and retained there for sometime.Oil and the blackgram paste is removed after few minutes and hotwater bath is given to the patient.


It is a traditional treatment of kerala.In this treatment medicated paste is applied on the head.


Pichu is generally done for the head. It may be done for the other parts according to ailments. In this,a thick cloth or cotton dipped in medicated oil is kept on the affected part of the body for certain duration. The patient is made to sit on a chair,facing east .0il is applied on the head and a cloth is tied around the forhead .A cotton or a cloth folded about the thickness of the palm dipped in the special oil is spreaded over the head.oil is poured over it again as it drain from the cotton.the cotton may be changed after,and the old one used can be dipped in the oil and squeeze it over the folded cotton. Duration of the treatment is about 45minutes.
