A drive along the villages and highway crossing rivers and passing by coir factories on your way to the backwaters & houseboat
The journey from Fort Cochin to Alappuzha takes between one to 2 hours depending upon the traffic. During the journey we track down the coast, leaving behind the hustle and bustle of Cochin for the increasingly somnabulent atmosphere of the backwaters.
When I describe the journey like that it sounds rather lyrical, but the reality is little different as India's love affair with roadside strip development is very much in evidence on the main road.
The journey starts with us following the winding road out of Fort Cochin and you will know you've left the city behind when you cross the wide water where the backwaters meets the port. From here on we follow the main road south skirting past the town of Cherthala. It is now a straight run South and you will pass the many churches and schools that line the road. Visible beyond them are the coconut groves and a few disconsolate paddy fields.
If you are travelling to the main house boat jetty then we will pass through Alappuzha. There are a few jetties beyond the town and before the town and so you may find as turning down a narrow lane to get to the Lake.
