Prawn Teeyal ( Chemmeen Theeyal)


  • 1 Cup Prawn
  • half Coconut ( grated)
  • Salt (to taste)
  • Turmeric Powder
  • Cumin seeds
  • Baby Onions (5 nos)
  • Ginger (small piece)
  • Edible oil
  • Drumstick (if u prefer)


  1. Take some prawn and heat it in a heavy bottomed pan, add grated coconut, pepper, cumin seeds, aniseed, and dry roast (without oil), at low heat. Keep stiring it with a spoon, be careful you do not burn the grated coconut and continue till it turns into deep brown in color.

  2. Add pieces of onion, drumstick (if u prefer) coriander powder, chilli powder, and turmeric powder, roast little more, at low heat. Grind this mixture with little water, to make a smooth paste and keep it aside.

  3. Strain the Prawn water, and put into a bowl and add 2 tablespoons of oil in a pan, and heat it.

  4. Now add the onions, ginger, garlic, and green chillis, turmeric powder and salt (to taste), and wait till the prawns are cooked.

  5. Now add the grinded mixture kept aside and let it boil for 5 more minutes, remove from heat. Now season it with some dry red chilly, curry and dried mustard and keep it closed for a while. The curry should not be too waterey, nor should be too thick...The prawn teeyal is ready
